Every Stitch Tells a Story

A few weeks ago, I visited the Red Dress exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane. At first glance, it’s simply breathtaking, a flowing crimson dress covered in thousands upon thousands of stitches. But the longer you stand there, the more you realise this isn’t really about a dress at all.

It is about people.

Over 14 years, 380 embroiderers from 51 countries added their own stories, symbols and traditions to create one extraordinary piece. Some stitched flowers, birds, landscapes, family memories or cultural patterns.

Every panel is different. Every contribution matters. None tries to overpower the others. Together they create something that no single person could ever have imagined or achieved alone.

I couldn’t help but think of Lutheran education.

Across Australia , we are wonderfully diverse. Different contexts. Different gifts. Different stories. Yet we are part of one shared calling, to help young people know they are deeply loved by God and equipped to serve the world.

Paul reminds us:

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”
1 Corinthians 12:27

The beauty of the body of Christ is not found in everyone looking or thinking the same. It is found in each person bringing who they are, trusting that God can weave our differences into something beautiful.

One of the quotes at the exhibition stayed with me:

“What we can achieve working together in community and collaboration is far more impactful than trying to work alone.”

That’s a timely reminder for all of us.

In Lutheran education we often talk about collaboration, but collaboration is more than sharing resources or attending meetings. It is choosing curiosity over comparison. Generosity over competition. Listening before speaking. Believing that someone else’s success strengthens us all.

When we work this way, we reflect something of God’s kingdom, a community where every person is valued, every story matters and every gift has a place.

Perhaps that’s what God has always been doing. Taking the individual threads of our lives, the bright ones, the tangled ones, the joyful ones and the difficult ones and stitching them together into a story of hope that is far richer than any of us could create on our own.

As we continue to walk together across Lutheran Education in Australia, may we celebrate the unique threads each community brings. And may God continue to weave us together into something that reflects his love, grace and hope for the world.

Because, in God’s hands, every stitch matters. And together, we become something truly beautiful and strong.
